Legends clash in "Godzilla vs. Kong" as two legendary rivals engage in a dramatic fight for the destiny of the planet. Kong and his guards go on a risky trip in search of his rightful home, accompanied by Jia, a little orphaned girl with whom he has developed an extraordinary and intense attachment. However, they find themselves suddenly in the way of an infuriated Godzilla, who is wreaking havoc around the globe. The epic confrontation between the two titans, sparked by hidden powers, is merely the beginning of the mystery that lurks deep under the Earth's core.

As they hunt for a potent energy source, Apex founder and CEO Walter Simmons engages former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist Nathan Lind. A powerful anti-gravity field within the tunnel killed Nathan's brother as he attempted to explore the Hollow Earth. Walter discloses Apex has built Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, customized ship capable of withstanding the gravity field's pressure.

Nathan travels to Skull Island to help them find the energy source. He meets his colleague, Ilene Andrews, who is Jia's adoptive mother and a Monarch anthropological linguist. Nathan wants to use Kong as a navigator because Skull Island can no longer hold him and let him live. She says that Godzilla would come for Kong as soon as he was moved off Skull Island, but Ilene at first doesn't want to go. Nathan convinces her that they need to do this mission to stop Godzilla's rampage and that they can also find Kong a new home.

Because Godzilla has been startled by Kong's deep charges, their combat has been broken up.

With no other option, Nathan disables all of the ships' powers in order to fool Godzilla into thinking he destroyed them and Kong was defeated. After seeing the shattered fleet, he swims away, delighted with his win. The team chooses to fly Kong to an Antarctica entry point for the Hollow Earth, where Godzilla was first frozen, as they prepare to reactivate the ships. Jia explains to Kong that his home is beyond the door, but he refuses to enter.

Given that they cannot return Kong to Skull Island due to the cold, Nathan asks Ilene whether Kong would go down the tunnel if there are others like him. Ilene instructs Jia to ask Kong if his family is down there, causing the Titan to enter and the teams to follow in their HEAVs.

Meanwhile, Madison and Josh track down Bernie, who recognizes Madison as Mark's daughter and joins their inquiry, believing Apex is to blame for Godzilla's erratic behavior. They slip inside the devastated Apex base together, only to discover that the "eye" Bernie had mentioned earlier had vanished. The crew is accidentally imprisoned and carried in an antigravity transport vehicle transporting Skullcrawler eggs down an underground tube to Hong Kong when they find a mysterious facility deep beneath.

Ren Serizawa, the son of Dr. Ishiro Serizawa, is in charge of Apex's ultimate weapon, "Mechagodzilla" a mechanical Godzilla. As soon as Mechagodzilla is up and running, Walter sends in a massive adult Skullcrawler dubbed "Number 10" to see how well it can take on the titans. Mechagodzilla grips and restrains the Skullcrawler as it nears Madison, Josh, and Bernie, before cleaving it in two with a massive red energy beam. Mecha shuts down as a consequence of being limited by the power source.

Kong and Nathan's crew discover a similar ecology to Skull Island within the Hollow Earth. They are unexpectedly assaulted while traversing the area by a pair of Warbats, with one of the HEAVs being destroyed. Kong was able to rescue the party by killing the first Warbat and swinging its carcass onto the second, knocking it unconscious. However, the beast recovers and constricts itself around Kong. Before the Warbat has a chance to suffocate Kong, the creature is hit by missiles fired from Nathan's team's HEAV, allowing Kong to escape and savagely beat the monster to death before feeding on the Warbat's intestines.

After that, Kong and Nathan's team keep going on their journey. They reach their destination at a huge stone temple that once belonged to Kong's ancestors. In the movie, Kong finds an ancient axe made from the dorsal plate of a dead member of Godzilla's race as he explores inside. Then, he sits on top of a huge throne on the inside of the cave. Kong learned that the same power source that Nathan's team found can also recharge the axe. The Apex team, on the other hand, uses spider-like drones to get the power source and send it back to their base in Hong Kong, even though Ilene says that Apex can't just take the power source. Maia has her guards aim their guns at Nathan's team, only for Kong to angrily bellow at them in their defense. In the meantime, Mechagodzilla sends Godzilla a signal. When Godzilla senses the machine's activation, he heads right for Hong Kong.

Godzilla recovers and gets to his feet as he hunts for Kong on a nearby structure. Kong ambushes Godzilla from above and puts him in a chokehold, attempting to strangle him. This is done to divert Godzilla's attention away from the battle. Godzilla, on the other hand, manages to break free and unleash his entire rage on Kong, dislocating his left arm, slicing him with his claws, and even stomping on his chest twice, despite Kong's attempts to pull Godzilla off of him by pounding his damaged leg with his right hand. In response to his vanquished opponent Kong, Godzilla roars angrily at him, who is restrained and held down.

As if impressed by Kong's resilience and prowess, Godzilla shows mercy and spares his rival's life before walking away, leaving Kong alive but badly injured as he eventually loses consciousness due to commotio cordis.

When Ren arrives at Apex headquarters, Walter orders Mechagodzilla to deploy Godzilla to murder him. Although Ren has warned them not to utilize the new Hollow Earth energy source before testing it, the mecha has been activated instead. Bernie, Madison, and Josh are also captured by the security personnel and brought to Walter's office. Madison accuses Walter of taking responsibility for giving mankind the opportunity to fight Godzilla and the Titans, despite the fact that Walter maintains that he did not incite Godzilla's war or cause the entire catastrophe.

The energy source and Ghidorah's brain networks cause Mechagodzilla to go berserk, killing Walter with a sweep of its hand and electrocuting Ren. Mechagodzilla escapes the Apex facility under Victoria Peak Mountain and rampages around the city before Godzilla tackles it. As Mechagodzilla approaches Godzilla, it begins a missile barrage at its biological counterpart.

After Kong awakens, he witnesses the battle between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla before meeting up with Jia, who tries to convince Kong that Godzilla isn't really his enemy. Though Kong doesn't believe her at first as he continues to watch Godzilla being overwhelmed by Mechagodzilla, Jia reveals the truth to him that the robot is the "real" enemy, not Godzilla. After a moment, Kong finally accepts and puts aside his grudge before heading into battle to help Godzilla while fixing his dislocated arm.

When Godzilla sees Kong holding his axe, he supercharges it by blasting it with his atomic breath, enabling Kong to dismember Mechagodzilla limb by limb and take its head off before holding up his prize and sitting down to rest with a tremendous shout of victory.

Later, Monarch erected an observatory in the Hollow Earth. When Nathan and Jia happen to get a glimpse of Kong on his morning ramble, Ilene and Nathan are the first to notice him. Kong rushes onto a cliff, banging his chest and embracing Jia as his new home and realm in his screaming proclamation of himself as King of the Hollow Earth.

The prevailing consensus is that Godzilla vs. Kong is a good movie. On Rotten Tomatoes as of April 16, 2021, the film has 341 reviews, 254 of which are fresh, and a "Tomatometer" with a 74% certified Fresh score. Critics have agreed that Godzilla vs. Kong delivers on its title, removing human drama and character development in favor of the sheer spectacle of huge monsters battling it out.

The site's summary of audience evaluations had a similar sentiment, writing that "This long-awaited blockbuster matchup makes it easy not to think about the so-so story and characters by serving up plenty of action and incredible effects." Indeed, critics largely enjoyed the film's monster brawling portion, but some voiced dissatisfaction in the "half-baked" human part of the picture. The film was credited with breaking a five-day weekend box office slump fueled by the COVID-19 outbreak, earning an estimated $48.5 million dollars by Sunday morning. WarnerMedia did not reveal viewership data for the film on HBO Max, but maintained that it had the highest viewership of any series or feature published on the channel since its introduction. The picture also enjoyed tremendous overseas ticket sales, with an extra haul of around $236 million in non-U.S. countries.

On April 17, 2021, it was announced that Godzilla vs. Kong had eclipsed the overall box office receipts of the film Godzilla: King of the Monsters, despite the fact that box office receipts were still slightly reduced as a result of the epidemic.

Godzilla and King Kong have not featured in a film together in 59 years, since 1962's King Kong vs. Godzilla.

It's Terry Rossio's first Godzilla picture since he wrote the script for the 1994 feature that was never created.
